Hip Replacement Q & A
Hip replacement surgery replaces damaged portions of your hip with artificial prosthetics. The goal of a hip replacement is to reduce pain and stiffness in your hip joint while restoring function and mobility.
During the procedure, Dr. Hussamy removes your damaged or injured hip joint and restores it with an implant.
You’re a good candidate for hip replacement surgery if nonsurgical treatments haven’t relieved your hip pain. Many people in need of a hip replacement have:
Arthritis
The two main types of arthritis — osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis — can inflame and degrade your hip joint. Over time, the cartilage surrounding this joint may deteriorate, leading to pain and stiffness in your hip.
Osteonecrosis
Osteonecrosis is a condition that limits blood supply to the ball portion of your hip joint. Without a consistent supply of blood, your joint can dislocate or fracture and cause bone deformity, stiffness, and pain.
Tumors
A bone tumor in your hip can break down the joint and limit your mobility.
Dr. Hussamy may recommend hip replacement surgery if you have frequent hip pain that doesn’t subside with medication or pain that worsens when you walk, get dressed, or sit.
To determine whether you’re a good fit for hip replacement surgery, Dr. Hussamy performs a full examination in addition to blood tests, X-rays, and an MRI if necessary. You should stop using tobacco products at least four weeks before your surgery to avoid postoperative complications.
Dr. Hussamy and the team use Stryker® total hip replacement prosthetics and MAKOplasty® robotic hip replacements for optimal fit and function. The MAKO total hip system is specially designed for those with degenerative conditions like arthritis. After your evaluation, Dr. Hussamy can determine which option is right for you.
During the procedure, Dr. Hussamy makes an incision in either the front or side of your hip to remove any damaged bone, tissue, or cartilage. He then implants the artificial socket and the small round ball at the top of your femur bone.
